Hey, y’all! Here is my January book review! I read Glow by Megan E. Bryant. It is a mix of both realistic fiction and historical fiction. Throughout the book you will hear from two characters, Lydia Grayson, a young 18-year-old girl living through World War I, and Julie, 100 years later as she struggles with her mother, best friend, college, and a dead-end job. While shopping with a friend, she came across a series of paintings that caught her eye in a thrift store. Without question, she purchased them for herself and discovered their hidden glowing images. They depicted what was happening in the actual painting, but with more gothic and nightmarish elements. Julie became extremely curious about them and was determined to identify the artist and the backstory behind the mysterious paintings.
Lydia worked in a factory painting watch dials for soldiers fighting in World War I while writing endearing letters to her true love off on the front lines. With new and exciting scientific paint, Lydia was convinced that it would solve all of her problems.
Glow follows the journeys of both young girls as they investigate more about this mysterious and unknown paint, learning how it can benefit them, but also hurt them.
I really enjoyed this book as an easy read with a little bit of history. It inspired me to do some of my own research about the Radium Girls because I had never heard about their story. It was a perfect combination of realistic fiction, historical fiction, and a little bit of romance! I would rate this book a 4.5/5! So good!
xoxo, Joanna
